چکیده

Age and growth of the European barracuda, Sphyraena sphyraena, were determined by examining sagittal otoliths belonging to fish sampled in eastern Adriatic Sea, as northernmost region Mediterranean. A total 113 specimens (59 females, 53 males, one individual indeterminate sex), ranging from 23.4 42.5 cm length, analyzed. The maximum observed age was 5 years for both females this barracuda population dominated 3 year old fish. Growth described von Bertalanffy curve (L∞ = 55.58 cm, K 0.12 year−1, t0 −4.29 year, R2 0.580), performance index (Φ’) 2.57. Otolith width, mass measured, utility these morphometrics predictors S. sphyraena evaluated. results showed that counting otolith annuli produced a better estimation than proposed linear models based on relationships between morphometrics. In comparison with data available literature our Sea provide more insights into life-history traits species can be used future effective management conservation.

Studies on Lipids of Barracuda, Sphyraena pinguis

(1) The characteristics of the lipids (acetone-soluble lipid, lecithin, cephalin and sphingolipid) obtained from barracuda, Sphyraena pinguis GUNTHER, were studied from the view point of fat metabolism of fish. (2) Forty-one fresh sample fish caught in the Komekami fishing ground near Odawara City (west part of Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan) on the 4th of October, 1959, were extracted with acetone...

Larval ecology of the great barracuda, Sphyraena barracuda, and other sphyraenids in the Straits of Florida

The great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) is a widespread, ecologically and socioeconomically important coastal fish, yet very little is known about its larvae. We examined spawning and larval ecology of Western Atlantic sphyraenids using monthly ichthyoplankton samples collected over 2 years along a transect spanning the east–west axis of the Straits of Florida (SOF). Samples were dominated by...

Selective mortality during the larval and juvenile stages of snappers (Lutjanidae) and great barracuda Sphyraena barracuda

Selective mortality during the early life stages in marine organisms can affect the magnitude and composition of recruitment, yet these processes have not been examined in economically important predatory coral reef fishes. Utilizing 3 different stage-specific sampling techniques (shipboard plankton tows, larval light traps, juvenile surveys/seines), we repeatedly sampled multiple cohorts of 3 ...

Extraction, Characterization and Application of Gelatin fromCarcharhinus amblyrhyncho and Sphyraena barracuda

Demand of gelatin for food and pharmaceutical application is increasing because it is one of the most widely used food ingredients. Fish gelatin represents one of the important types of gelatin from other sources other than mammalian gelatins and it may thus be considered as an alternative to mammalian gelatin for use in various food and pharmaceutical applications. The main objective of the st...
